From this idea grew a project that accompanied our children across multiple grade levels. They planned, researched, experimented, and searched for solutions together.
An initial pond was created and celebrated with great enthusiasm. Soon, however, it became clear that it was technically not sustainable over the long term. Yet the idea lived on. Excursions to the wetlands, nature observations, and the children's fascination with wildlife continually revived their wish for a biotope of their own.
The decisive spark finally came from the GALEMO parent community: the gardening group took on the planning and brought the project to life under the professional guidance of the specialists at Biotop. During the gardening days, the children were right in the thick of it. They rolled up their sleeves and got to experience firsthand how a new habitat came into being out of many individual steps.
Today, we can watch tadpoles turn into frogs, water striders and water beetles discover the pond, and the frog houses built by the children actually being moved into. Meanwhile, among the aquatic plants, the first water lilies have begun to bloom.
Our school pond is therefore more than just a biotope. It also speaks volumes about learning at GALEMO: Developing your own idea. Trying things out. Discovering that something doesn't quite work yet. Seeking knowledge and support. Finding new solutions together. Taking on responsibility. And experiencing that one's own actions can make a real difference.
